Well look what happened

While in DC this week, the Catholics who descended on Capital Hill were lobbying on behalf of PEPFAR and a spending increase of 50 Billion. We look what happened the very night after our visits. Makes me proud to know that a unified Catholic voice did produce some results. Peace

Glad to know the same government who put us the equivalent of $30,000 in debt for every man woman and child in this country, is willing to put us in an even greater amount of debt - all for the sake of a good name!

Not for a good name, but to take care of the poor.

I agree with the first comment. At what expense are we supposed to help the poor? Are we supposed to straddle our children and grandchildren with trillions of dollars of debt ($9 trillion to date)to help the poor and then lead our country into bankruptcy? Why doesn't the church spend the money herself? Or is it because the church has had to spend $1.5 billion on abuse settlements that she now is reliant on the state to do what the church should be doing?

As to the comments.
Mark 10:21 Comes to mind.
The Church is involved and commits billions of dollars a year to help the poor in the world. As it relates to this issue remember that 25% of HIV/AIDS work done around the world is through the Church. Luke 12:48 also comes to mind. Maybe we could redirect some of our war funds to helping the poor of the world. Iraq alone has cost something like 499,412,600,000.USD, maybe we could find some money there? Or maybe we could get our priorities set well in the US. The US and N. Europe spend almost 13 billion a year on pet food, that could help provide basic health care and nutrition for the poor around the world. I think if the priorities are proper then we have plenty to give. To say we don't have enough to give I think reflects a lack of faith in the Lord to work with and through us.
