Annunciation

Happy Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord!

Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.”

Remember folks only 9 months of shopping before Christmas! ;-)

New things for St. Matthew and for me

We had a nice town hall meeting at St. Matthew tonight. A report on religious ed, some q&a about the new translations of the Mass and it hopeful implementation in Advent of 2011 and...the fact that this will be my last year at St. Matthew. Yes it is true, this time no joke. The plan right now is that I will go back to school to get another masters degree this fall. It will be a ThM (Catholic Social Teaching concentration) from Boston College School of Theology and Ministry. It is something I have been praying about for quite some time and Archbishop Gregory has been very supportive. I will tell you that this is not a done deal, as anything can change, but I am hopeful nothing will stand in my way. One great piece of news is that the school has awarded me a fellowship which will cover 50% of my tuition. I am really looking forward to focusing on academics for a year...and a chance to do a bit more work for CRS. If things go as I think they will, I will be at St. Matthew until the beginning of July and then begin school at the end of August. So there you have it. If you have any questions just let me know. Peace to you all and have a Happy Lent. Padre Vic

Deforestation

Some perspective on the issue. We are called to be stewards of creation. Me thinks we need to do more...

Ekklesia

Every Christmas eve for as long as I can remember my family has sang the song "Mary had a Baby" and "Silent Night". I have never had a place on the web to find that song, but my brother Tony found it and now you can hear it as well. It should be the first song that starts when the page loads but if not you can find it in the links. Enjoy!

Just heartbreaking...and uplifting as well.

Check out this blog from a guy who is working to get clean water to the people in Haiti...something he has been doing before the earthquake. His name is Chris and the past two days have been a harrowing experience. Please make sure to pray for the people of Haiti and those affected by the earthquake. Make sure to read the whole post from his day when the earthquake hit. Pray and Give!

All I could see was her face and left arm, and she frantically called out to me. I asked her to calm down because it would help me to work and asked her to pray for both of us. She calmed down and became very brave. I was having trouble seeing her where she was jammed under the slab. I pulled out a very large piece of rubble that didn’t really help Jacqueline at all (her name was Jacqueline). There was some sort of object behind that rubble and when I went to move it it turned out to be another girl’s bottom. The girl cried out but I could barely hear her – her whole head was underneath rubble.
At this point I began to realize that I was in over my head. All I had was a hammer, and it was quickly becoming pitch dark with twilight fading and no electricity anywhere. I tried to borrow a flashlight, but it was impossible. I had a moment of feeling intense helplessness. After thinking and praying for a minute, I told Jacqueline that I had to leave her and find more help. I couldn’t do anything without a flashlight, and she needed to keep praying and remember that her parents were coming to look for her.

PRAY

God of all creation, as we weep with our family in Haiti, console us.
In this time of crisis, open our eyes to look beyond the disaster
to see Christ in our brothers and sisters in Haiti, as Christ sees us.
Be with us as we stand in solidarity with those living and working in Haiti.
Be with us in our mourning and guide our efforts to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, comfort the grieving and stand for justice.
With your mercy, sustain us at this time as we continue to work for peace and justice.
Amen.

Been about a month.

Well it has been about a month since I had to put Rosie to sleep. I sure do miss that little stinker. Seems as I leave the office each day I wait for her to wake up so we can go home. I went to the back porch yesterday and realized I had not been there in weeks because I have not had to let her outside since she died. Well I thought I was doing okay, but after watching this short documentary I realized just how much I miss her but how correct the decision was for her. Beware this documentary is a real tear-jerker...you have been warned. Peace
