St. Catherine Newman Center

Well here are some photos from my preaching this weekend and St. Catherine of Siena Newman Center at the University of Utah. All in all it was a pretty light weekend because of the generosity of Fr. Daniel Rolland, OP and Fr. Peter Rogers, OP (Pastor). Fr. Daniel was kind enough to celebrate the 5 and 8:30, I celebrated the 10:45 and Fr. Peter showed up to celebrate the 7, so I had one Mass to celebrate and four Masses to preach, such a sweet deal. Combine all this with seeing some old friends, being with family, working for CRS and snowboarding a bit, it was a great weekend.

This is Kelly and Chad Rosamond and family. Kelly was a CYO member of mine in Rome Georgia when I was a seminarian. She is a member of the Newman Center as well. Eat your heart out Pamela!!!

Do I always look like this when I preach?

So serious!

Look at those hands, yikes!

Friday was a day to shop

Well on Friday we not only ate at Ruth's Diner but we had some shopping to do for the Green's new home. Since the three older kids were off to ski club and the youngest in day care, we took Nathaniel with us shopping, boy did we have some fun...and got furniture and shopping overload, enjoy the photos.

Back Home

Well I got bumped from my flight yesterday afternoon and put on the red-eye and got home this morning early and with 400$ DeltaDollars too boot. More posting from the weekend coming soon, sorry for all the delay. Peace

Day of Snowboarding.

Well I got a somewhat early start to the day of snowboarding. Then I stood and waited for the bus, 45 minutes of waiting. Then it was up the canyon in an overly crowded bus, at least I had a seat. I got to the mountain and had a good morning of solo snowboarding, well solo on a mountain filled with others, well not so many people...I never stood in line for the lifts...so you know what I am talking about.

Here I am waiting for the bus. I was a bit chilly but not too bad.

Early on in the day, still enjoying every minute of it.

Towards the end of the day and I was starting to get tired. Hat tip to Fr. Michael for lending me a coat that looked good with the rest of my outfit.

After a morning of snowboarding by myself I me this dude named Dave (TDND). We road up a lift together and then we found out that we went down the mountain about the same speed...so we spent the rest of the day snowboarding together. It was a great day of snowboarding and TDND made it fun, as I have never snowboarded with anyone as long...like I said it is usually a solo experience. TDND pushed me a bit and I went down more Black slopes than I usually do...especially since there was over a foot of new powder, sweet! Anyway the photo above was from late in the day with TDND and I stopped for a break and a snack. Only rode two more runs after this photo as my legs were getting tired. TDND offered me a ride down the canyon (Yeah! no bus, thanks Dave) and of course I accepted. He dropped me off at a restaurant and my brother-in-law Richard picked me up...then home for a shower and a nap. What a great day!

Remeber those Thank You's???

Remember those Thank You's??? Well I finished them on the plane and they are on the way as you read this. Peace

Happy Valentine's Day to you all.

Before I head out to the mountain, I just wanted to wish you all a great Valentine's day. Be careful with those links. Enjoy

Like Sunday during the Rite

Poor bird, at least the guy is Catholic.

It is cold, just not this bad.

Well I made it to Salt Lake City. I will put some photos up later from the journey and seeing my sisters kids. I know it is cold in Georgia, it is cold here as well...no not as cold in the photo...so relatively it is not that bad now is it? I am taking a day off today to go snowboarding at Brighton. I will hopefully get some photos for you to enjoy. Peace

They are withces!

cute video, I like the creativity. enjoy

Boy Scout Sunday

February 3rd was Boy Scout Sunday and our Cub Scout Pack had the Light of Christ award and the Parvuli Dei award to give out to the boys. Here are the photos, enjoy. (h/t John S for photos)

Wadda-ya think?

So yesterday I went to the local Mini Cooper dealership to see about driving one of their cars for a day or so, well you can see it below. So tell me honestly, what do you think? I am kind of in the market for a new car, maybe. Just surveying my options right now. Deacon Bill thinks I would not like the car, for what it is worth he is not the only one who thinks this...thus the reason for my extended test drive. So hit the comment box and tell me what you think.

Theatre Geeks UNITE!

I saw this and thought Josh Groban might enjoy it, as he loves being a theatre geek. A little anti-racism piece for the UN International Day for the Elimination of Racism. Enjoy

Take three minutes and watch this

This is a nice piece about photographer/artist Gordon Parks from when he was at St. Benedict's Abbey. It is a nice piece put up by the Kansas City Star about work being brought out for all to see. So sit back, watch and...Enjoy

Brides

Well if you have been reading my blog for a while you know how much I love brides. When I read this story I about cried for this bride and her groom. Maybe I need a good cry or maybe this one got to me because I know how much of themselves brides invest in their wedding day...I probably need a good cry. Anyway it reminds me of a guy who I went to seminary with who died while sleeping the night he was ordained. peace

Visitors Today, Part II

I told you we would have more visitors at St. Matthew today and boy howdy, we did. Loads more people. It was fantastic. It was marvelous. I could not have been happier and I know the Archbishop was as well. We had the RCIA, Rite of Welcome today and the place was packed. This was the fourth and final Rite of Welcome for the Archbishop to do this weekend and it was great. We had lots of the south side parishes here. When the names of the Elect were read I almost cried it was so beautiful. We had some fun as well, getting to see old friends and make some new ones as well. Since is was a bit warm in the Church with all those people we opened the doors to the outside, and would you know it, right in the middle of the Archbishop's homily a young woodpecker flew into the Church and I thought, "uh oh, this is not going to end well." Well it didn't, the little guy flew right into the back windows and everyone gasped. I scooped him up and put him outside, an ornithologist (profession or amateur I am not sure) came and helped me get the bird back and flying. All was well and the Archbishop made sure all knew things were fine. It was a great time, I was really touched with this Rite. Thanks to all who made it so special. Enjoy the photos, I put captions with them for your enjoyment. Peace

Visitors Today, Part I

We are going to have plenty of visitors today. We started with Fr. Luke Ballman, the Vocation Director for the Archdiocese. He called me yesterday and asked if he could con-celebrate this morning and I offered him to take a Mass since Deacon Gayle was preaching. There were a few strange looks when I came into the church, but once I explained a few things it all made sense. Fr. Luke is such a good guy, and of course the parish family members responded well to him...thanks for the help Luke. More visitors to come. Peace

New Deacons

Last night we had the Ordination of 20 men to the Diaconate. I have taught these guys for the past two years, had three of them for Spiritual Direction, and gave a retreat to these men and their wives. I could not have been happier or more proud. Here are the photos from my seat in First Class (I got to sit on the front pew because the sanctuary was full).

First Friday of Lent dinner

Well it was the First Friday of the Lenten season and there was an ordination in Atlanta to attended, so the Deacons and I invited Fr. Michael and Fr. Bryan out for dinner. Since it was still kinda Chinese New Year we went for Chinese. We went to my favorite Chinese restaurant in Atlanta, The Green Sprout, they did not let us down. I had the Sweet and Sour Ginger Chicken with the coconut bubble tea, de-lish! Deacon Bill had vegetables and rice, Deacon Gayle had chicken and eggplant, Fr. Bryan had Chicken Fried Rice and Fr. Michael had Cashew Chicken. We had full bellies and we were off to the Ordination.

Office Cleanup

For a Lenten exercise, I cleaned my office. These photos take you through my process.

The first one is from after I had started to clean things up.

Look at all the junk mail and stuff I had to get rid of.

Getting better as I begin to sort and stack the stuff.

Ta-da and basically done. A bit more arranging and the office is cleaner than it was and ready for the Archbishop to visit on Sunday.

This is for Zachary Green

Today was Chinese New Year and I went to Chin Chin in Newnan for dinner. Here is a photo for my nephew Zachary Green (and for all of you) to enjoy.

John 20:13, kind of!

This is just too good to pass up. All is fine now, do not be worried.

My type of exercise

funny pictures

Ever need to take a photo of Atlanta

From Peachtree City? This thing might be what you are looking for. It can take a photo from 18-32 miles away. This might work in Oklahoma but here in Georgia with all the hills. I guess you would have to get up really high to make it work well. Funny, I still think I want one, kind of?? no not really...okay maybe really! No! DO NOT WANT.

UPDATE: Link is now working.

Catholic Day at the Capitol

Today was the Catholic Day at the Capitol and I went down to join the faithful to lobby our representatives on two issues presently before them. We were to speak to our representatives regarding HB 185 Death Penalty Bill(asking for a vote of No) and HR 413 & SB 335 English as Official Language of Georgia (asking for a vote of No). I spoke with Senator Ronnie Chance and had to leave a note for Representative Virgil Fludd. I will be doing something similar in Washington DC later this month during the Catholic Social Ministries Gathering, even Archbishop Gregory will be in DC to make our Georgia visits to the Hill this year. Here are some photos for your enjoyment. Peace

Kiku

I went to Kiku with Fr. Bryan last night for a quick dinner before a movie (Untraceable...more like Unbelievable or Unbearable don't waste your time with that movie). The show at Kiku was much better. Here are the photos so you too can enjoy the fun!

Super Tuesday

Well it's Super Tuesday and yours truly went to do his civic duty. Here are two photos...there is something about that second photo, not sure what it is but I feel like I am glowing...who knows???

From here to there...here comes the church!

Ok this is lots of fun. I sometimes think the construction of the new font is about as much building as I want to do but this I think would send any Pastor over the edge. Enjoy.

Strips of paper, words of strength and power!

Well the font continues to come along nicely. Today they are pouring the concrete and we added all the strips of paper people wrote on this weekend. For those of you who do not know, this weekend our parish family members were asked to write their name and a word of faith on these colorful strips, to be added to the holes in the block with the cement to shore up our fonts strength with a bit of who were are (our names) and a bit of our strength (a word or words of faith). Check out the sideshow to see some of what was written. It was nice to see children and old people giving a bit of themselves to help with the construction of the font. Peace

OLV: Student v. Staff Volleyball and Basketball

Well this morning we had the big game. We played three games of volleyball (2 student wins, 1 staff win) The staff won the basketball game, hands down. For what it is worth I played for the staff. Here are some photos. Enjoy

Pre-Lent Confessions

Well Lent is just around the corner, and with Lent comes Penance services. Well on Wednesday we had a Penance service at All Saints in Dunwoody. It has become and annual tradition at All Saints to have a mission just before Lent and one of those nights they have the Penance service and Msgr. "Doc" Keirnan invites all the priest of the Archdiocese to help out and then a dinner after. It is always a good time, here are some photos to prove that a good time was had by all. Enjoy

Font frame construction

Here are some up to date photos of the font. The guys you see in the photos came in and in about 2.5 hours and put all the block out and leveled, it was amazing to see craftsmen at work. You will see for yourself this weekend but it is amazing. enjoy

Never in Tyrone

Why can't we ever have something this cool in Tyrone?

It is something in Tokyo Bay, put in by Sony to promote a new movie. It looks neat on this little video, bet it was a bit better IRL. Enjoy

Lent is just a week away!

Are you ready for Lent 2008? If you are like me you have thought about it but have not decided how this Lent will be something special. We have a week left, perhaps we should prepare ourselves??? (FYI Masses here at St. Matthew are 9am and 7pm) So what are you going to do? How are you going to use it as a time to change? Will sacrifice be too much? Will doing more not help? What are you going to do and more importantly how will your Lenten journey increase the Joy of the Lord in your heart? If you have ideas use the comments to share them, lets see if we can support each other on our common journey during Lent.
Here is something, attributed to Thomas Merton, I got from a priest friend around New Year's but I think it works well for Lent. Maybe it will stimulate some thoughts for you.

Pay attention to people.
Fewer things honor people as much, or make them peaceful more readily, or give them an experience of their worth as clearly as paying attention to them.

Verbalize human experience and teach others to do this.
The more inarticulate we are, the more likely it is that we might seek violence as a way of expressing ourselves.

Reject excessive activity, accomplishments or success.
There is something belligerent about frenetic action.

Practice contemplation.
Contemplation is defined as life review, in silence, connecting our reflection with the ideals we have not achieved, making amends for things we regret, and thanking God for the good we were given, the losses we survived, the love we received beyond all measure.

Embrace silence.
Silence is shattered not by speaking but by eagerness and anxiety to be heard by others. Silence invites others to speak. Genuine silence is creative and liberating.

Resist consumerism.
A desperate need to possess is a form of violence.

Lose, then let go.
We are acculturated to go from success to success. Losing gracefully, even in terms of the long run, is a remarkable virtue. Clutching at success, when letting go is necessary, destroys us.

Read Scripture.
If you were to read Scripture reflectively for only five minutes a day, your life would be enriched. Scripture makes the norm, not whatever is presently fashionable, but what is truly enduring. It roots us and gives us peace amid the turbulence of passing crises we face.

Maintain a sense of history.
We become frantic when we see life in the short run. In the longer view of human history or even our personal histories, patterns of meanings emerge. The good does prevail.

Hold the conviction that people are basically good.
People must be reliable or else the Gospel would not have lasted; Christ would have been forgotten. Much of the violence done in the name of religion has been premised on the idea that people are evil.

May the energies of your heart invite the Holy Spirit to visit you with ever-increasing frequency for dispassion. Eastern Orthodox benediction.

Rice

Seems as if there is lots out there about rice so here is a quick post gathered from recommendations of others and stuff I have found myself. You know how much I love rice and have even posted about my new favorite forbidden rice. Well Jim Immel sent me this link to a project that donates rice, with a small catch. From their website:

FreeRice has two goals:

  1. Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free.
  2. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.

This is made possible by the sponsors who advertise on this site.

I thought this sounded fishy so I checked it out and it all seems to be on the up and up. I have a personal best, so far, of 1100 Grains donated on a Vocabulary Level of 40, can you top that? Freerice also has a sister site Poverty.com, I would encourage you to go read some of their stuff on poverty...find out where the US falls in a list of countries who give to help the poor of the world. Find out the different diseases that are made worse (or deadly) because of poverty.

Then the boingers had a vlog about rice used to show demographics. It was done by a group called Stan's Cafe, a theatre company. Here are some links about the display: here, and here , and of course here is a video. Enjoy

Fritti

Fritti is the best place for Italian style pizza in Atlanta. In fact they are the only people in Georgia with Certified by Verace Pizza Napoletana, and mmmmm is it good. They are the sister restaurant to Sotto Sotto, which is probably one of my over all favorites in Atlanta. Anyway I had dinner at Fritti the other night and it was spectacular as usual. If you go, try the fried mushrooms and the fried calamari. As for the pizza it is the Fungi di Bosco, or nothing else. Enjoy

NO, PAPARAZZO

Fr. Paul (Skinny Paul) says, "No" to this paparazzo! Denied!

My new favorite store in Atlanta

I love H Mart in Riverdale. It is a Korean grocery store with load and loads of cool food stuffs, and I love 'em, ok that might be a bit much but I love this place. I found a place that carries forbidden rice and natto, all in one store. They have a total section devoted to rice, variates of white rice you have never heard of. Since it is Korean, a whole section of kimchi, if you are into that stuff. (anyone work for a Korean company? Millers?) Anyway, you should go for a few reasons, whanna hear them? here they are:
  1. Fresh Vegetables, all sorts
  2. Fresh Fish, pick them out of a tank and have them cleaned before your eyes
  3. Rice
  4. Any type juice you want
  5. Natto
  6. Different types of sweets from all over Asia
  7. Variety of hot sauces
  8. Yogurt Scotch
  9. Fun things you have never seen...trust me.
  10. Tofu all varieties
  11. Frozen swamp eel!
They also have a food court with all types of Oriental food, yummy! Here are my photos of the expedition to the H Mart (I have added captions for your enjoyment). Enjoy

what is this about?

Ok so at the Mass on last Monday this guy was in front of us the whole time. It kinda bugged me, what with aligning Christianity with warfare. This is not the first time I have been troubled by it, but it just kind of bothered me at the Mass for Life. Anyway, what do you think. Oh, and since I am asking for comments. When you are done commenting, just make sure to leave your name at the end of the post or sign up for an account so I know who you are. So again, what do you think?

And if you cannot read his shirt (click photo for larger view) it says:
Christian life is WARFARE. Hit hard, with heroic virtue. Hit fast with the 10 commandments. Hit often with vigilant prayer.

Oh and when you read it remember who said it first, and in what setting.

Lunch at CRS Southeast office

Since we are both Global Fellows, Deacon Bill and I were invited to share some thoughts with the staff at the CRS regional office here in Atlanta. Executive Vice-President of US Operations Joan Neal was present for a lively discussion on the work of CRS in our world and our region. Here are some photos from the lunch. I love oranges.
